The game: SNK Vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash is the defcon of that nostalgia.

The game's mechanics are guessable much like any other card fighter. You have your character cards, action cards and counter cards. There's stock-like energy called "force" that's used to perform most actions in the game such as placing a character card on the field or using a specific character card's skill. Even with no real direction given, you can catch on to the game specifics easily. Nothing exactly ground breaking in terms of innovation, but the real novelty shines brightly by the aforementioned nostalgia.

The game takes place in "The Card Tower" which apparently the store clerk who sold you the game was supposed to brief you on because you aren't given any background on the settings your thrown into. I wont bother attempting to explain the storyline of the game, you're better off watching any given Saturday morning action/adventure cartoon, I can guarantee it'll be around the same premise. The navigation is done with a basic point and click format, so their isn't much to do aside from battles.

As a reviewer, I do feel obligated to cast aside my amorous feelings on the game and judge it as it is. Unfortunately, when this is done you're left with a pitiful shell of a game. It's disgraceful translating is only exceeded by it's powerful drive to give each cookie cutter NPC more brainless dialouge. Whether this was by design or the translating team grew lazy and decided to make crap up as they go remains unknown. Its a store bought game and I grabbed it off the shelf myself. It's the final product and I will judge it as it is.

SNK Vs. Now, rumble I think was the last generation feature; it's not the next-generation feature. I think motion sensitivity is. And we don't see the need to do that. Having said that, there will be specific game function controllers, potentially like steering wheels that do include vibration or feedback function -- not from us but from third parties."
-Phil Harrison of SCEA

Sony's higher-up knows just what you want and dont want, even though you dont know it yet.

When did things like rumble become so underwhelming? Ever since current gen gamers can remember, people have gone out of their way to attain that beloved force feedback. We'd even go as far as to inject a "rumble pak" directly into our controller; that of which had more of an appearance of an industrial sized battery for a cordless drill.

It didn't stop there either. Third party companies were kind enough to make enormous rumble peripherals for our game boy pockets. That way, we could turn something portable and conveniant into something immobile and unnecessary. We loved it though. Force feedback on the go seemed like a pipe dream, and it was, but we made it happen because of the interaction we got in our games.

Let's be honest, this design choice wasn't on a single designer's whim. You don't take almost a decade of normality in functionality and then trash it under the "out dated" guise. Alot of people have told me: "Oh, well they thought it was a minor feature, so they took it out to lower the price." You can't convince me that they took out something like rumble in a controller to reduce price for a console that shipped with a $600 price tag.

Another reason was from Phil Harrison's quote above which is that rumble is last gen and taking its position is motion control which is next gen. Taking this simple logic in mind, what does that say about design choices for Nintendo which utilizes both? As far as the SIXAXIS' motion control in racing games(a common example I use) i've heard more people than not who prefer the analog over the SIXAXIS. As far as a game like Excite Truck which forces you to use motion control and executes it successfully so, well, I couldn't see myself playing the game any other way. In Excite Truck, rumble is masterfully consummated through a plethora of unconventional instances, from landing your truck in a forest of trees to feeling your engine burning out.

If Sony's going to tell us that motion control is the next generation in hardware and that rumble is the previous and no longer needed, they best have the games to back it up in the future.

-Greg Myers

UGR First Impressions: Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

Castlevania has a collected fan base unlike any other. They're accustom to a routine, precise execution of their beloved castlevania experience. The one thing that seperates castlevania from every other game is the great quality in which each is produced. Unfortunately, I've never stood in that collective. I'm a newcomer to the series and I'm happy to say Castlevania: POR has steered me towards joining that collective.

For those who don't know (which isn't many of you I presume) Castlevania is a 2d, action/adventure, side scrolling game. Since I haven't played close to any of it's predecessors, I'll give my first impressions using my, 'soon to be traditional' Pros and Cons format to deliver to you my views and opinions.

Pros
Castlevania's latest installment on the DS has alot to be sported and flaunted being it's traditional fantastic presentation to it's stylized and intuitive gameplay.

-Control
The first thing that jumped out at me was the way it controlled. I'm not particularly found of the DS' D-Pad, but you don't need to exert unnecessary tension to get the results you want or screen. Not a very large detail, but important none the less.

-Graphics
Even before you get to feel how well your character controls, you obviously get a clean look at the graphics. In Castlevania's traditional 2d manner, the game continues it's great art direction. The back drops serve less as an eye catch and more as a great way to set the mood for the area. In some instances the backdrops are 3d rendered a la New Super Mario Bros. and other DS games that have followed that trend.

-Sound
The DS has had a great repetoir thus far when it comes to the ability of outputting great audio. This recent iteration of Castlevania does not fall short. Much like the graphics, the audio sets the mood at any time and situation.

-Content
The sure amount of content was what suprised me the most in this game. The amount of items and skills attainable through a certain drop rate in monsters reminded me of those addicting aspects in mmorpgs. Unique weapons and skills that have a relatively low drop rate and aren't just handed to you improve the game's replay value significantly.

Cons
With so much greatness coming out of this game shown in the procs, it's hard to muster up the strength to expand on the minute cons.

-Story
Now hold on and listen before you start spamming me with hate and flame mail. The story isn't lackluster in Castlevnia per-se, but it's hard to pick it up and run with it. I haven't beaten the game just yet. In the beginning of the game I had to draw a few self-concieved conclusions about the story, that may or may not be true. So far, the reason I play is not because of a compelling story.

-DS Interactivity (Or lack there of)
Portrait of Ruin is such a great action adventure game, but sometimes I forget I'm playing on a DS. I can understand simplicity in the game should not be taken for granted. There's been too many instances to count where a certain game simply degrades it's gameplay value by limiting the player to something like touch screen movement alone. However, there's too much potential in hardware features to just ignore. Stylus controlled movement? Not so much. Microphone support in co-op and shop mode? A great investment of time and cartridge space.

Okay, so maybe those were pretty weak cons.. It does show my love of the game so far though.

Bottom Line:Castlevania fans are going to be as pleased as ever; people looking for a great action adventure game will be pleased as well.

UGR Review: Super Swing Golf

Super Swing Golf got the unfortunate privledge of being "one of those games" released shortly after the Wii Launch. What is "One of those games"? The kind that do not, by any means, get the attention they deserve. With everyone looking at everything in a very hardware-centric month, it's hard to notice the little cute and clever golf sim on the side. This might be for better than for worse however.

Super Swing Golf's main affirmation, as quoted from the box, is: "Fantasy Golf. Real Swings." What better controller to utilize for true to life swings then Nintendo's own motion sensing Wii Remote? At a rocky start, you'll pull back your Wii Remote to determine your power. From there, you'll create the "circular motion" intending to perform a "Pangya" thus hitting the ball directly straight. Easy enough. Although it sounds commendable on paper, it does not come half as well together in action. You'll find yourself teetering back and forth until you can max the distance gauge and perform your, likely to be, satisfactory follow through. Sure, you can rough the learning curve and perfect the swing, but the precautions needed to experience that "Real Swing" feeling are kind of neglect at that point. Also the aformentioned learning curve doesn't settle well for people to experience a good party game. The lack of players you get when playing the game doesn't help either. It's a grand idea sparked with a great tutorial with an unfortunate and mediocre follow through, much like the swings themselves.

Aside from the poorly played, gimmicky "Real Swings", there's content to appease players with. Sporting a Dead Or Alive: Extreme Beach Volleyball-esq interface, SSG has an overabundance of items to buy and collect including: clubs, items (for use while golfing), Mystical Phoenix balls and costumes. Sounds like it could be an experience for a casual gamer who might even be a casual golfer on the side, but one must first consider the alternatives. Before you go out and buy this 50$ golf simulator, first realzie that you can get the same exact game with more modes and online play for free. That's right, this game originated as an online downloadable game, spare the swings and you'll spare the 50$. The conceivable circumstance where you might want to choose the Wii alternative i'll leave up to your imagination, but definetly look into the online alternative before making your purchase. I give Super Swing Golf a 6.5 out of 10

6.5
(out of 10)
-Greg Myers (Of Ultimate Video Gamer.com)

Free Game Golf Online Video

UGR Review: Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime

Dragon Quest is a franchise that completely has the ability to pull a spin-off like this. It's one of the most loved titles in Japan and only second to Final Fantasy here stateside. Rocket Slime follows one of the loved and overlooked characters in the DQ series. The slime, naturally. The game follows Rocket, a young hero who's abruptly destined to save all 100 slime residents of Slimenia and defeat the evil plub.

The gameplay takes the form of a platformer adventure where Rocket stretches then releases himself to attack his enemies. This may be the largest portion of the game, but where things really shine is the tank battles. Throughout the game you're constantly collecting materials and monsters to send back to your town for to benefit you in battle. You use materials found in the world as ammo in your tank to fight back against other tanks. Further on into the game, you'll recieve recipes from Slimes that you save.
The recipes are for materials that you eventually alchemize in order to make better ammo to fire out of the cannon in your tank. This depth allows for lots of customization. You have about 60 slots for ammo in your tank and it's up to you to decide what to use. Ammo ranges from shurikens, to swords even to flat out missles. This element of the game makes Wi-fi support a great investment, suprisingly though, it's unseen. However not all is lost in multiplayer love. DQ:RS sports multi-card play for some pretty awesome tank versus tank matches. The story and characters are cutesy and riddled with puns which expand to a large audence.

Square-Enix shows us that Rocket Slime is further proof of what [crazy] quality is achievable on the Nintendo DS. This game just might have been the test that made way for Dragon Quest IX exclusivity for the DS. I give Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime an 8.5 out of 10

Bottom Line:Rocket Slime is a great, quality filled purchase. Expect to get your moneys worth.

8.5
(out of 10)
-Greg Myers (Of Ultimate Video Gamer.com

UGR First Impressions: Super Swing Golf

Alright, to start..

Okay i really dont know where to start. This game absolutely boggles my mind. Not in a good way, no, but not in a bad way either. It's caught itself in the complete mediocricy of a semi-launch title. So to gather my thoughts i'll make a list of pros and cons to give you the good and bad of this game. The only difference is i'll put the bullet points in obnoxious, excrutiating detail.

Pros
1. Interface. The game has a pretty self explanatory design that works. They don't force you into any tutorial (even though you should, because without prior experience you'll be lost)and if you felt so inclined you can jump straight into the action...As much action as you'll get in a golf sim anyway.

2. Art. Pangya has always had a very distinct anime art style that has a loyal following. You may not be a fan of it yourself, but it's served well to the people who do fancy it.

3. Presentation. At a graphical standpoint, SSG stands well on a console that is constantly critisized for it's graphical power or lack there of. It succesfully creates beautiful landscapes that look fine from a far and equally well close up.

4. Value. Kind of a broad subject, but i couldn't generalize this under anything else. SSG has lots of items to collect in the game and plenty of stats to boost. What i'm saying is that SSG doesn't lack in replay value. Being it Tecmo, a fair comparison would be Dead or Alive: Extreme Beach Volleyball.

5. Customization. Even though you can't actually customize your own character, which seems to be the trend amongst sports games these days, there's still alot of room for customization. Yet another thing you can compare to DOA:XBV (or rather DOA to pangya).

Cons
1. Gameplay. Filing "gameplay" under cons isn't a good way to start the entire section. The back of the box reads, "Fantasy Golf. Real Swings." Oh yes, it's definetly a fantasy that those swings are real. And putting a live action shot of a woman swinging a wii-mote doesn't fool me, the average gamer. Now, hear me out for a second. You cannot blame this on user error. There's a method to the madness, but getting to it is a game within itself. After all i dont go out and buy Tetris just to have to solve a rubix cube before playing it. I think the "Real Swings" are gimmicky, but can be mastered with muuuccch patience. And im talking, "Not a single person in America this game's being marketed to" patience. However, not all is lost. In fact you can just use button controls to justify your purchase. And button controls are a suprisingly good alternative.

2. Multiplayer. Another quote from the back of the box, "Play in multiplayer tournaments - up to four players - or play multiplayer games." Consumer: Yes! I'm finally gonna be able to take advantage of my wii's online capabilities! Wrong! Not a single online component is to be found in this game. No multiplayer, no leaderboards, no nothing. Come on Tecmo! You couldn't wait another month to release in 2007 with online? If you think im gonna invite my friends over to play this game then maybe you're not too familiar with the console your submitting it on and what alternatives i have. (Wii Sports) Possibly a game where i can customize my character?

3. Downtime? Now this is a constant complaint amongst reviews that i've read so i thought it'd be good to address it in the con section. The Pangya Festa is a story type mode where you go to different places for different reasons playing against different people. Not like a match play esq mode where you play through the holes solo and appear on a leaderboard. You golf right along side your opponent and watch their...every...single...move. It becomes quite a long, drawn out experience and.. i found myself reading while playing. It's just one of those things you'd like to have a skip button or at least just a fast forward button to take advantage of from time to time.

A heavily opinionated conclusion...
Not to sound cliche`, but SSG is either a game you love or hate. It's not gonna be that Wii Sports equivalent that's gonna bring the family together and create a revolution. At best I would say this is a superior alternative to the golf componenet of Wii sports that many didn't seem to favor. The "True Swings" SSG claims to have are simply not there and in all honesty, there's alot better alternatives to get your golfing fix.

UGR Review: .hack//G.U.

The .hack franchise has always been a confusing one amongst gamers stateside. A four part series of RPG's that relate directly to one another is just unseen. This seems more like a game that would never see the United States in it's life span, yet here we are today with the sequel of the original series, .hack//G.U. You cant grasp the concept of G.U. without first going to it's roots in the original .hack series. .hack was an Action Rpg that was to simulate the entire MMORPG experience. Everything from player interaction to sending and receiving short mail. This culture shock of a game has effected the way that people review it too. You're either one that stays far away from this wallet grabber of a series or you're contagious with it and cant wait for the next installment to be released. I'm the latter and i cant help but let it reflect on my review.

The Original .hack series was most known by it's faults. An extremely bland fighting system, lack luster environments and at some points tedious grinding and uncomfortable pacing. In all respect, most of these acclamations are 100% correct, and they didn't even bother to change it once throughout the four part series. In fact, the only reason that you would be playing it through all four games was for the storyline which unlike its game play was spectacular. So with all these in mind, you would expect G.U. to follow its predecessor relatively closely to become a mediocre game. This reviewer thinks not. G.U. doesn't just improve in the areas that were lackluster in it's predecessor, but it improves and expands them. The storyline which was the reason to buy the original series is still in tact and dives deeper into the plot with new and interesting characters. The game play has been improved with a new battle system entirely. Instead of creating a non-physical field of your enemies vision around you to commence a combat situation, it creates a battle depending on the enemy recognizing your presence (a la Grandia). This serves to make much more interesting battle situations. Your now equipped the abilities to do skills called "Arts" that can be triggered through regular means or through a special opportunity known as a Rengenki which will boost your morale. Morale is a seperate gauge that you bring with you to each battle. Once the gauge reaches it's peak, you'll be able to trigger a team attack for massive damage. The battle system is not lacking, but in fact comes to par with many of the fantastic RPGs you'll see from company's like Square-Enix. G.U. doesn't fail at creating that authentic MMO feel, more so than the original series. You'll always find yourself with plenty to do other than the linear plot. Also, in G.U. contrary to the original series your class can use more than one set of weapons (although you do start out with twin blades).

What G.U. does for it's normal player is above and beyond our expectations, but don't be fooled. Unless your planning on buying the Special Edition of .hack//G.U. which comes with the cyber connect 2 disk that will inform you of the entire series, you might be left in the dark. Much like the original infection, G.U. takes the player's hand and puts him through the steps. If you stayed away from the original series because of it's repetitiveness you may still not be warmed up to G.U. You'll see the same scenery time after time whether on a quest or solely for leveling sake. This can be such a mixed review, because it really depends on what you're looking for in a good game. While .hack//G.U. can be powerful in some areas it can be relatively dissapointing in others. With this in mind I give .hack//G.U. an 7.5 out of 10
7.5
(out of 10)
-Greg Myers (Of Ultimate Video Gamer.com)

UGR Review: Metal Slug Anthology (Wii)

Metal Slug is a familiar name to the thousands of people in the 90's who spent quarter after quarter challenging one of the most intense 2d fast-paced action shooters ever to see the darkness of the arcade. So naturally, the news that every single Metal Slug iteration would be bundled together in a compilation was a god send that hasn't been seen in the title's 10 year life span. Let me get one thing out of the way for all those elitist arcade dwellers. The blood is not missing and every frame of the spilling of alien intestine juices remains to be seen.

But SNK's wonderboy doesn't go without faults. This compilation will leave collectors with alot to be wanted. Metal Slug Anthology presents new intuitive controller designs. Some are pretty intresting at first glance. There's one that emulates the actual feel of the classic controls where you hold the wii-mote in an arcade stick like fashion to control your character. Fancy, but not rewarding. Most of them throw away, quick, last minute gimmicks thrown together at the last moment. There are extras that may be unlocked with tokens. Tokens being attainable by completion of the games. The extras being art gallerys, music and a text interview. Not very exciting, but it might pique the interest of a few legit collectors.

Even if the collection comes short of providing anything extra that can be found with a few clicks of the mouse online, it still has that same meaty hardcore gameplay seen in arcades for over 10 years. And chances are that's exactly why you're purchasing this game. Metal Slug Anthology is exactly the kind of game i can see myself still playing from time to time years after my purchase. I give Metal Slug Anthology (Wii) an 8.0 out of 10
8.0
(out of 10)
-Greg Myers (Of Ultimate Video Gamer.com)

UGR Review: Wii Sports

A lot of pressure was riding on the back of Wii sports. After all, the core reason of it's existence is being a tech demo premiering just exactly what the Wii can do. But what Wii sports does is more. I've seen it first hand accomplishing exactly what it was intended for. Bringing the unwilling hand of the general public into the gaming spectrum. That's all great for Nintendo, but if that sort of thing doesn't apply to the already willing gaming crowd, how does Wii Sports stand up? In this review i will treat it as it should be which is as a compilation. In this review i will text review each different game in Wii sports then end in a summary.

Tennis
Tennis is Wii Sport's friendliest game. This makes it the most appealing to the casual audience, so anyone with a logical mind can deduct that since the casual and hardcore audience of gaming cannot co-exist, it simply wont be enjoyable to anyone with a history in gaming or a small attention span. Obviously that's an over exaggeration, but there's some truth to it. The players on screen move on there own, so its your job to time the swing. This makes things really friendly for people who wouldn't otherwise pick up a video game, but it leaves anyone looking for a game with depth lacking. I found it surprisingly hard to move up in rank when playing alone, just for the fact that i couldn't do anything to win other than return the ball successfully.

Baseball
You could see this one coming from a mile away. The Wii remote is the perfect tool to emulate a baseball bat and it does with surprising success. The rules are simplified as the distance you hit the ball determines your ending base opposed to how quickly you run. The two controllable characters are of course the pitcher and batter. Pitching can be varied depending on what buttons you press during your pitch. Anything from a curve ball to a splitter can be thrown and at a speed determined by you. What really shines is this game is the batting. It just seems like alot of fun as you perfectly time your swing sending a ball out of the park. I think this game found a perfect medium between depth and ease.

Bowling
I haven't found a single person that has disliked this game to date. It's such a well done simulation of an actual bowling alley that it deserves the praise it receives. It seems like everyone has a particular style to approaching this game. Elements like that really make it enjoyable for everyone to play. Unless you hate bowling in general, there's a good chance that you'll love this game because a bowling experience is exactly what you're getting.

Golf
Golf in a video game just plainly doesn't seem like a good idea, but that hasn't discouraged eager developers. Great titles like Hot Shots Golf and Tiger Wood's PGA golf tour have succeeded so well because of their amazing quality or their wacky, absurd take on the sport. So in theory a true to swing golf sim should fit perfectly along in the genre for Wii Sports. Unfortunately, something just didn't click. Unless you're a serious hard-core golfer in real-life, you're going to find Golf on Wii sports to be a boring, toilsome experience. There's absolutely no depth, twists or attention grabbing features. So with games like Bowling pushing the bar for the compilation, Golf is just left in the dust.

Boxing
From what I've read it seems that people don't take much of a liking to Wii Sport's boxing, but i came out of the experience with a different impression. The game starts off a little sketchy, so it makes it really easy to draw conclusions, but sticking with it reaps fun game play. There's alot more involvement with the Wii Remote in this one. To guard your face from a punch, you put your hands in front of your face in fashion you want to see on screen. Even with an outward appearance of being "gimmicky" it seems that after beating down multiple opponents there's an upward slope of control improvement as you start to familiarize yourself with what's given to you. Give this one a chance, it definitely improves with time.

Other than the aforementioned games, there's also neat training courses for every sport to sharpen your skills. Also, there's a Wii Fitness option which sets you up with various tests to ultimately determine your Fitness "Age" a la Brain Age. Wii sports comes packaged in with a retail Wii console free. That's a factor that can't be overlooked when making a detailed review. Wii sports is a great compilation sports simulator that can be played with friends and family, gamers and non-gamers alike given to you absolutely free. Even though Wii Sports doesn't allow for alot of depth you'll still come out of the experience satisfied and possibly with a great experience.
I give Wii Sports a 7.5 out of 10

7.5
(out of 10)
-Greg Myers (Of Ultimate Video Gamer.com)

UGR Review: Elite Beat Agents

Elite Beat Agents is the sequel to the Japanese exclusive, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan. EBA is a rhythm based game, but not the kind you would expect. It's an exclusive for the Nintendo DS who's innovative design combines the stylus with rhythm based game play. In EBA you're part of the CIA-like organization known as the Elite Beat Agents. A special group that's sent out to cheer for people to make their lives better.

But how can Elite Beat Agents stand in a world with Taiko Drum Master and Dance Dance Revolution, much less on a portable system?

Elite Beat Agents doesn't just stand up to the competition, but it gloriously raises the bar of the entire genre. Funny enough, one of the biggest aspects for a rhythm based game that focuses on music is it's presentation. EBA has an ecstatic and over the top visual presentation that's both fun and looks great on the DS. It's what i believe to be EBA's most redeeming feature. It boasts a fast-paced, 2d, Anime/comic Esq story constantly being unveiled on the top screen. Your progress on the touch screen dictates the outcome of the story on the top-screen. It's a fun and attention grabbing element that doesn't wear thin even when you're getting frustrated for the difficulty of a particular song.

The song selection isn't exactly choice for any specific crowd, but they did hit a comfortable medium that wont make anyone cry or cringe. The sound quality is satisfactory and listening to the rhythm really helps your timing in the game play.

Here's a compiled list of the songs.

Source: IGN

The core of this game's success lies in it's superiorly addictive tap to the beat game play. You might go into a song failing several times consecutively and still want to try again and again. There's much to be unlocked including different modes with different difficulties. As well as bonus stages and the "Elite Beat Divas". All of the agents unlocked in single player mode can be used in the multi-card play. Notably, the multiplayer is far from throw away. 2-on-2 versus matches in which each team cheers for a different person holds together better than you might expect.

In review, Elite Beat Agents is a definite must-have for any DS owner. It's a "Touch Generations" game that not only guarantees that certain quality only attainable by a Nintendo Seal of authenticity, but also comes at a low economical price. I recommend this game as a perfect gift as the holidays are coming around the corner. And for that reason I give this game an 8.5 out of 10 .
8.5
(out of 10)
-Greg Myers (Of Ultimate Video Gamer.com)
